A burning question...

Why did God choose Abram?

I understand the deal with Noah. (But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. Genesis 6:8) And I can see why He chose Enoch. (Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. Genesis 5:24) But what was the deal with Abram? What made him special?

Mary Jane and I talked about this a little today. I finally wondered if maybe that was the point. Maybe there wasn't anything special about Abram. Maybe that's what grace and mercy are all about. I don't know.

What do you think?

  1. That's a good question! I'm not sure, but I consulted some commentaries that seem to think he was a righteous man in an idolatrous nation much like Noah and that's why God called Him and told Him to leave. I don't know if he was or not, but he was certainly willing and obedient to pack up his family and leave to a place they didn't even know yet, when God told him to. Great food for thought today!

  2. He sure had faults and made bad decisions like the rest of us. I agree with Michelle that he was obedient, though.
Thanks for posting questions to ponder!

  3. I don't know but I think it was because he was obedient...

  4. I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. Genesis 18:19

Abraham was singled out as a regular man who was committed to teaching his sons God's ways.

    I love this!!!

  5. I was reading Romans today and found this:
    Romans 4:3,20-22
Abraham believed God , and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
(Abraham) did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was able to perform. And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."

Abraham was a man of faith.

  6. I love that about lots of "characters" in the Bible. Jacob's another example of a deceiver who was transformed by God! Thankful for this grace...Love, A

  7. Jesus often said, "He who has ears let him hear" I think Abraham was "tuned in" to the Lord.

In John, when Jesus is accumulating his disciples, he becons them with a simple invitation, then they "left" something to "come" to Him.

Intresting that God called Abraham to "leave" his land, and walk with God. Abraham, like the disciples joined God rather than... perhaps ignoring Him...?

    Great question to ponder!
